To many, Bodie Island Lighthouse in South Nags Head is as beautiful and picturesque as any lighthouse anywhere. But the mystery of how to pronounce its name is a conundrum for the uninitiated. John Tennis, writing for the Bristol (VA) Herald Courier steps forward to solve the mystery.
“Twice this year, I’ve gone lighthouse hopping on the coast. I never made a climb. But, I was fully ready to reach the top of the Bodie Island Lighthouse on the first Wednesday in August.
Just south of Nags Head, North Carolina, that lighthouse was recently opened to visitors who want to climb to its perch, nearly 200 feet above the ground.
Yet, coming here, I found it closed to climbers – with a note explaining why: The temperature inside the lighthouse on that hot day was as much as 103 degrees!”
