Kelly’s Outer Banks Tavern to remain open into next season.
After rumors spread that Kelly’s was being sold and might not be open this season, questions remain unanswered about the fate of one of the OBX’s most iconic hot spots. According to Russ Lay writing for the Outer Banks Voice, Mike Kelly has put the word out that negotiations are still ongoing and plans are in place for food, drink and entertainment through the summer.
“The iconic Kelly’s Restaurant & Tavern will be with us at least through the summer of 2017 and may be around as late as the end of 2017.
So don’t put away those dancing shoes yet or sulk about the demise of those wonderful sweet potato biscuits, seafood bisque and massive fried and broiled seafood platters.
Late last year, owner Mike Kelly disclosed that he had entered into talks with a foreign-owned company to purchase the property, tear down the restaurant and build a grocery store.
At the time, Kelly said the company was in the “due diligence” phase and no final decision had been made nor any sales contract signed.
Kelly did not reveal then, nor did he today, the identity of the company expressing interest in the property.
The local rumor mill has focused on three likely candidates — Lidl and Aldi’s, two German-owned concerns. Both have been expanding into North Carolina and Aldi’s also owns Trader Joe’s, an upscale discount grocer.”
