NC DOT is fighting tides and overwash to keep the road open.
Open but still super sketchy, NCDOT has managed to push the sand and ocean waters off the road at the S Curves just north of Rodanthe. Caution is the word, though, as high tide may bring fresh flooding, and it looks like there will be more wind on schedule for this weekend. At last report, Highway 12 is still closed on Ocracoke Island. Check out the video Benny Baldwin of Baldwin Video Productions shot for the Outer Banks Voice of the situation.
“NCDOT said travelers should exercise caution and expect sand and water on the road surface. Additional delays and closures may be needed as crews continue to work to keep travel lanes safe.
Baldwin Video and Above The Coast shot pictures and video with a drone Monday afternoon of the problems the state Department of transportation and Hatteras Island residents have faced on Pea Island, at Mirlo Beach and in Avon during a powerful nor’easter that sent wind and high water onto the East Coast.”
