Scheduled closing will be in April.
The shrinking Kmart/Sears empire is shrinking and the effects of the corporate struggles of the one-time retail giant has come home to the Outer Banks. Writing for the Outer Banks Voice, Michelle Wagner elegantly captures the loss what has been an Outer Banks mainstay for years.
“I wasn’t expecting to feel the way I did when I walked into the Kmart in Kill Devil Hills the other evening. After all, I was only running an errand to replace a broken coffeemaker and ensure that I had a warm cup of coffee in the morning. Hearing the news of the store’s scheduled April closing last week, I felt for the employees who would have to be looking for other work. But as far as the store itself, I hardly gave it a second thought.
The Big K on the corner of Fifth Street and U.S. 158, to me, seemed to have been dying a very slow death for years. And besides, it was just another store, right.”
