Sea Cow was pregnant when she swam five miles to escape Dorian’s wrath.

Under the heading of you can’t make this stuff up, a few weeks after Dorian’s storm surge swept across Core Sound, it was reported that six wild sea cows of a herd on Cedar Island had survived by swimming across the sound to the Core Banks. As it turns out, six and a half may have been more accurate. Mark Price reports on the story in the Raleigh New & Observer.

“A storm-tossed cow credited with swimming 5 miles across the Core Sound to the Outer Banks during Hurricane Dorian was pregnant during the ordeal, and it just gave birth.

The healthy calf has been seen following its mother around Cedar Island, which sits between the North Carolina coast and the Outer Banks.”
