I’m not a runner, but I find marathons and the people who run them fascinating. So imagine an ultramarathon, which is any sporting event involving running and walking longer than the traditional marathon length of 26.219 miles. Now imagine it starting in Corolla and ending in Hatteras, all run on Highway 12, in March(!), a month notorious for its nor’easters and generally nasty OBX weather. Oh, and imagine doing it 30 hours.
Welcome to the Graveyard 100, coming up on Saturday, March 7th, 2015!
“The 100-mile course is actually 101.5 miles point-to-point. Runners will travel the entire length of paved highway on Bodie Island and Hatteras Island viewing much of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore via historic Hwy 12.
Runners will cross the 2.5 mi. long Bonner Bridge spanning Oregon Inlet between Bodie Island and Hatteras Island at the 50mi. point between noon and sunset. All runners will cross Bonner Bridge on foot unless there is risk of injury from wind/weather. In the event of a weather emergency or road closure an alternate course will be in effect. Bonner bridge does not have a coned off right of way.”
Registration for this year’s race is full, but you can still get involved by volunteering. If you’re an ultrarunner and are donating your time you’ll get guaranteed, discounted entry into the 2016 Graveyard 100!
