Annual migration takes apex predators past Outer Banks.
Great white sharks have pinged their trackers off the Outer Banks coast. According to OCEARCH who have made a science of tracking sharks in the world’s oceans, Jefferson, Cabot and Hal have sent signals in the past few days indicating they are just a couple of miles offshore.
That, of course is not like Katherine the Great White who wondered at one point into Pamlico Sound a few years ago, but they are in somewhat close proximity to the coast.
Great whites are very much a migratory species, and it is common for them to swim past the North Carolina coast as they head to feeding grounds to the north or south. In this case, it appears as though Jefferson, Cabot and Hal are headed north as the waters warm.
According to OCEARCH Jefferson is a 12’7” male tagged 9/24/18 off Nova Scotia. Cabot is a 9’8” male tagged 10/5/18 off Nova Scotia. Hal is a 12’6” Male tagged 9/29/18 also off Nova Scotia.
Really spectacular talking and writing about great white sharks, but generally they stay in deeper waters off the Outer Banks coast.
