Right location but positive ID a long way off
Lashed by angry seas just 100 yards from the Corolla shore, the tragedy of the Metropolis is one of the most horrific of the Outer Banks shipwrecks. When a local couple saw something sticking out of the sand, they began to investigate. Experts are cautious but the location is right, as Kip Tabb writing for the Outer Banks Voice reports.
“There was something about the little nubs of wood sticking out of the sand at low tide that attracted Suzanne Heisman’s attention as she and her husband, Kim, walked along the beach in Corolla in late September.
“They didn’t look like anything that was natural to the ocean. They were at an odd angle and the materials were not natural to the beach,” she said. “I gave it a yank to see if it would move, and I realized it was firmly imbedded.”
