The Southern Shores Flat Tops are an iconic piece of the birth of the Outer Banks tourist industry. A tour of the flat tops will be held Saturday April 12 and will include introductory remarks from Steve Gudas, PhD, on “The Lost Flat Tops of Southern Shores: The Vanishing Vernacular Architecture of the Northern Outer Banks.” Dr. Gudas was instrumental in founding the Flat Top Preservation Fund. This press release from the Outer Banks Community Foundation has the most complete information on the event we’ve found.
“The Outer Banks Community Foundation is proud to once again be a part of the Southern Shores Historic Flat Top Open House Tour on Saturday, April 12, 2014. The event will include the self-guided cottage tour from 1 pm to 5 pm, and a lecture on the historic architectural form at 11 am.
Tickets are just $5, and all proceeds will benefit the Flat Top Preservation Fund of the Outer Banks Community Foundation.”
