southern shores = safety prompts road closure

Popular Outer Banks shortcut to face restrictions.

Summer weekends see some 5000 vehicles pass through the narrow residential streets of Southern Shores hoping to bypass the traffic jam at US158 and NC12. For one weekend in June, the town is hoping to restrict access. Jeff Hampton writing for the The Virginian-Pilot has the story.

“A popular shortcut taken by thousands of Outer Banks visitors through the narrow, shady roads of Southern Shores will be off-limits for a weekend next month.

The town plans to block the left turn from U.S. 158 to South Dogwood Trail on June 23 and 24, one of the busiest weekends of the season, said Town Manager Peter Rascoe.

The closure will test what happens on a Saturday if roughly 5,000 vehicles – nearly twice the town’s population – cannot rumble through to bypass congestion on N.C. 12.”
