Located on the edge of town as Route 12 enters Hatteras Village, the Hatteras Island Ocean Center is now open. Director of Programming and Operation Miriam Kaplan has written a great description of what the newest addition to the Outer Banks ecotourism scene has to offer for the Outer Banks Insider.
“Do you ever look across the beautiful sound and wish you could take a closer look? Does vacationing on the OBX make you wonder about the ecology and history of these unique barrier islands? Do you have kids who want to learn and play but you want to keep them out of the sun for a couple of hours? Meet the Hatteras Island Ocean Center, a place for visitors and residents to visit, learn, and explore.
Here at the Hatteras Island Ocean Center, we are working to make Hatteras Island a better place to live and to visit by making use of the natural, cultural, and historic resources the island has to offer. We will also be building a pier on Hatteras Island to provide a place for people to fish, shop, celebrate events, and so much more.”
